Travellers' Tales

Getting about

There are some great areas to walk where there are very few cars if any but if you want to go between Ovacik and Hisaranu or Fethiye walk to the main road and flag down the local mini bus called a Dolmus. They run constantly and are cheap. Alternately there are plenty of bright yellow taxis which you can get either by flagging them down or from the rank or ring from your mobile. One very helpful man is Saban (pronounced Shaban) on 05364536825.

Money

The currency is Turkish Lira. They have just crossed a lot of noughts from their currency so whereas you used to be ‘multi-millionaires’ now it is more sensible. There are a great number of ‘hole in the wall’ machines so you can get cash out easily and it will give the instructions in English. In a great number of shops and restaurants and the markets they will take English money anyway. There are exchange shops as well plus banks in Fethiye.

Markets

There is a market in Hisaranu on Mondays and a bigger one in Fethiye on Tuesdays. Leather good are very good and cheap as are towels and clothes especially sports ware. Both markets have fresh fruit and vegetables and many village people come to the markets to sell their produce. There is a wonderful assortment of nuts and spices.

Food

There are lots of little shops that sell fresh bread, milk eggs and lots of basic food. They do have typical Turkish breakfast feta cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers. In town there are bigger shops especially in Fethiye where you can buy almost everything. Their meat is especially good. In restaurants there is plenty of variety both for the more adventurous and those who stay with what they know. (They cater for people with English tastes). For those that like fish go to the fish market in Fethiye where you buy your fish and take it to one of the restaurants around it for them to cook for you.
